Abstract Details

Purpose:

To examine tear functions of patients who were recently diagnosed as acne rosacea without ocular symptoms.

Setting:

Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital, Ophthalmology Clinic,Ankara Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital, Dermatology Clinic, Ankara

Methods:

This study includes 64 eyes of 32 acne rosacea patients without blepharitis and meibomian gland dysfunction and who were not on any topical medication. Tear functions were evaluated with Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire and measurement of osmolarity by using TearLab, Schirmer I tests without anesthesia and tear fluorescein break-up time (TFBT).

Results:

The mean age of patients were 46 (30-60). Twenty two of patients were female (69%) and 10 were male (31%). The mean Schrirmer I test result was 12.53 mm/5min. In 23 eyes (36%) Schirmer test was below 10 mm/5min and those eyes were evaluated as having dry eye. The mean TBUT was 11.2 seconds and 26 eyes (41%) were measured below 10 seconds. Mean tear osmolarity was 304.77 mOsms/L. Osmolarity was above 316 mOsms/L on 19 eyes (30%). Mean OSDI score was 32.5 (0-100). Mean OSDI score of patients diagnosed as dry eye according to results of Schirmer I (below 10mm/5min), TBUT (below 10sec) and tear osmolarity (below 316mosm/L) was 38.87.

Conclusions:

Our study indicates dry eye tests become positive before clinical signs of posterior blepharitis in one third of patients who were recently diagnosed as acne rosacea. Tear Osmolarity test which is gold standart for dry eye diagnosis is highly consistent with Schirmer and TFBT tests in these patients.
