Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare outcomes of Zeiss CT LUCIA 601PY and Alcon SN60WF monofocal intraocular lenses (IOL) regarding visual acuity, refraction, glistening and posterior capsule opacification (PCO).

Setting:

In this prospective randomized controlled trial 64 eyes (32 patients) underwent cataract surgery with CT LUCIA 601PY or SN60WF IOL implantation in order to restore distance vision. Exclusion criteria were, among others, ocular comorbidities and preceded intraocular surgery. Charite, University Medicine Berlin, Department of Ophthalmology

Methods:

As part of an ongoing study, subjective refraction (in diopters), monocular uncorrected visual acuity (UDVA, in logMAR) and monocular distance-corrected visual acuity (CDVA, in logMAR); as well as glistening and PCO were assessed. Examinations were accomplished preoperatively; and 1 day, 1 month, 6 months and 1 year postoperative between June 2014 and October 2015.

Results:

UDVA improved from 0.55 ± 0.39 (preoperatively) to 0.11 ± 0.14 (1 year postoperatively) with the CT LUCIA 601PY, and from 0.63 ± 0.27 to 0.10 ± 0.22 with the SN60WF. CDVA improved from 0.23 ± 0.11 to 0.02 ± 0.09 with the CT LUCIA 601PY, and from 0.30 ± 0.15 to -0.01 ± 0.08 with the SN60WF, difference were not significant. One year postoperatively, manifest refraction was -0.09 ± 0.47 and -0.04 ± 0.43 for the CT LUCIA 601PY and SN60WF, respectively. PCO was observed in both groups, while glistening occurred in SN60WF.

Conclusions:

The implantation of the CT LUCIA 601PY and SN60WF was uncomplicated and attained excellent functional results. Yet, the occurrence of glistening and PCO might be on focus of further improvements by the respective manufacturers.
