10 years after myopic LASIK: refractive results and pachymetry changes

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the long-term refractive results and changes of pachymetry after myopic LASIK depending on initial degree of myopia

Setting:

S. Fyodorov IR&TC “Eye Microsurgery”, St.Petersburg branch, Russian Federation

Methods:

The study included 48 patients (89 eyes) with different degree of myopia before LASIK. Follow-up was 10.1±1.9 years. Middle age at the time of investigation was 35.2±5.4 years. LASIK was made by standard method using Zeiss excimer lasers and Moria keratomes. US devices were used for pachymetry

Results:

In 10 years after LASIK for correction low, moderate and high myopia there is the increase in corneal thickness at 70.9%, 62.3% and 48.9% of the depth of ablation (p<0.05). Regression of refractive outcomes occurred in 62.5% of patients with initial moderate myopia (regression on average -1.2 ± 0.5D) and in 65.6% patients with initial high myopia (regression on average -2.27 ± 1.05D) (p<0.05). Refractive regression was negatively correlated with the increase in corneal thickness (r=-0.4; p<0.05)

Conclusions:

In 10 years after LASIK there is a significant increase in corneal thickness in patients with any degree of initial myopia. This process can be a cause of refractive regression
