Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the clinical results and the complications of conjunctival limbal autograft transplantation (CLAU) with application of mitomycin c 0.02 % to bare sclera and amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) with application of mitomycin c 0.02 % to bare sclera for treatment of recurrent pterygium .Also to compare the final cosmetic outcomes of these 2 techniques

Setting:

A prospective comparative randomized study

Methods:

80 eyes of 60 patients with recurrent pterygium were divided into two groups , group A included 40 eyes that underwent pterygium excision and MMC with CLAU , group B included 40 eyes that underwent pterygium excision and MMC with AMT . Recurrence was defined as fibrovascular tissue extension of more than one mm onto the cornea in the area of a previously excised pterygium after a a period of follow up from 9 to 12 months . Recurrence was compared in each group by using ӽ2 test.

Results:

No major postoperative complications were occurred during the follow-up period . In CLAU group (A) true recurrence (grade 4) was occurred in 5 eyes out of 40 eyes (12.5%) . While recurrence was occurred in 12 eyes out of 40 eyes (30%)in the AMT group (B) ( P value =0.043, ӽ2 test). The normal appearance of the operated site (Grade1) was achieved in 25 eyes (62%)in group A , in compare to 12 eyes (30%) in group B . ( P value =0.001, ӽ2 test).

Conclusions:

CLAU with MMC is more effective than AMT with MMC for treatment of recurrent pterygium .The final cosmetic appearance is more acceptable in CLAU group .
