Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of a foldable non-penetrating artificial cornea for the treatment of non-inflammatory cases of cornea blindness.

Setting:

CEOVAL - Centro Oftalmológico de Valencia, Venezuela by Jose M. Vargas.

Methods:

A prospective non-randomized study of 19 patients with corneal blindness due to non-inflammatory causes including failed grafts, burns, scars, dystrophies and keratoconus. Patients had the KeraKlear foldable non-penetrating artificial cornea implanted into a corneal pocket using a femtosecond laser after excision of diseased opacified corneal tissue.

Results:

100% of these patients had improvement in vision. There were no cases of endophthalmitis, retroprosthetic membrane or glaucoma. There was one case of infection and one case of corneal melt. Retention of the device during the follow-up period was 89%. Follow-up was from 50 to 62 months.

Conclusions:

These results of the KeraKlear artificial cornea show that this device can improve vision in patients with non-inflammatory causes of corneal blindness as a primary procedure and has a high retention rate over 5 years. Common complications of keratoprosthesis such as glaucoma and retroprosthetic membrane did not occur.
