Axial length changes after congenital cataract surgery

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate changes in axial length in patients with congenital cataract following cataract removal.

Setting:

Yuzuncu Yil University

Methods:

In this prospective study, patients were separated into three groups as bilateral pseudophakic group (100 eyes of 50 cases), unilateral pseudophakic group (32 eyes of 16 cases) and bilateral aphakia group (50 eyes of 25 cases). Axial length measurements were obtained preoperatively and in all follow-up visits by ultrasonic biometer in all cases.

Results:

Mean age at surgery and mean follow-up time were 42.2±43.7 months, 53.1± 43.0 months in bilateral surgery group, 41.8±33.2 months, 54.0±41.9 months in unilateral surgery group and 6.9±7.8 months, 34.1±34.2 months in aphakia group respectively. Mean changes in axial length were 1.7±1.6 mm in bilateral surgery group and 2.8±1.7 mm in aphakia group. In unilateral group, mean changes in axial length were 1.9±1.5 mm in pseudophakic eyes and 1.3±1.4 mm in phakic eyes (p=0.26). Moreover, we found statistically significant difference between aphakic eyes and normal eyes of unilateral pseudophakic group in axial length changes (p=0.001)

Conclusions:

Axial length of the globe increases following congenital cataract surgery. This effect is the most in aphakic eyes and moderate in pseudophakic eyes.
