Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate the visual performance of a new Extended-Depth Of Focus intraocular lens (EDOF-IOL).

Setting:

GB Bietti Foundation IRCCS, Rome, Italy

Methods:

The study involved eyes with corneal astigmatism of less than 0.75 D that underwent cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange with implantation of the MINI WELL (SIFI Medtech- Italy) EDOF-IOL. Best-corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA), reading speed with Radner’s chart, distance-corrected near visual acuity (DCNVA), defocus curve, contrast sensitivity and objective haloes assessment were tested.

Results:

165 eyes of 99 patients were enrolled. The EDOF-IOL was implanted bilaterally in 66 patients. The mean monocular BCDVA and DCNVA were, respectively, 0.02±0.07 LogMAR and 0.38±0.14 LogRAD; in bilaterally implanted patients, bilateral BCDVA and DCNVA were 0.00 ±0.05 LogMAR and 0.26 ±0.13 LogRAD). 90.9% of the patients with the bilateral EDOF-IOL reached a reading speed>80 words per minutes at 0.5 LogRAD print size. The defocus curves showed that the EDOF-IOL provided an increased depth of focus through 2D of defocus. Contrast sensitivity was within normal limits at all spatial frequencies. The mean visual disturbance index, used to objectively assess haloes, was 0.41 ± 0.27, suggesting a minimal influence of night visual disturbances.

Conclusions:

The new EDOF-IOL provides good visual acuity for distance, intermediate and near vision, with no loss of contrast sensitivity and minimal risk of night visual disturbances.
