Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the outcomes of congenital/developmental cataract from a tertiary eye care hospital in economically backward state of India.

Setting:

Tertiary Care Eye Hospital In Orissa, one of the most backward states of India

Methods:

A retrospective analysis of all patients diagnosed with congenital or developmental cataract that underwent surgery from February 2014 to December 2014. Data were collected on patient demographics, preoperative characteristics, intraoperative complications, and postoperative outcomes as well as complications.

Results:

A total of 51 eyes of 32 patients underwent surgery. There were 28 (54.9%) right eyes. There were 20 (62.5%) males. Amblyopia, nystagmus, and strabismus were the most frequent ocular comorbidities accounting for 26 eyes(51%),8 eyes(15.7%) and 7 eyes(13.7%) of eyes respectively. The majority (81.2%-26 patients) of the patients had surgery within 6 months of presentation. Intraocular lens implantation was performed in 88.2% (45)eyes. The most common early and late postoperative complication was, posterior capsular opacity (9 eyes – 17.6%).

Conclusions:

The main hurdle of treatment of congenital cataract is the financial factor and late detection. But those who underwent cataract surgeries, the results are encouraging. So a social awareness apart from combined efforts from NGOs ,Government and general population is the call of the day.
