Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aim of this study is to compare the postoperative corneal endothelial cell loss, after standardized phacoemulsification using Infiniti (Alcon, USA) and Signature (Abbott, USA) machines.

Setting:

This study was conducted at the ophthalmology department, Cairo University, Egypt, in a six months period.

Methods:

This study was a prospective cohort study. It comprised 30 eyes of 30 patients assigned for cataract surgery, with different grades of senile cataract. Patients were divided into 2 groups: Group A was operated by the Infiniti machine, and group B was operated by the Signature machine. Endothelial cell count was measured preoperatively and 1 month postoperatively using the Specular Microscope. At the end of surgery, we recorded the Effective Phacotime (EPT) and the Cumulative Dissipated Energy (CDE).

Results:

Percentage of mean cell loss ± SD in the Infiniti group was 9.80±3.29 %, compared to 13.83±5.61 % in the Signature group (p = 0.032). The mean EPT in the Infiniti group was 12.04 ±6.36, Vs 14.5 ±10.5 in the Signature group (p = 0.44). The mean CDE in the Infiniti group was 16.37±10.5, Vs 20.3±16.9 in the Signature group (p = 0.449).

Conclusions:

Postoperative endothelial cell loss following phacoemulsification by the Signature machine was significantly higher than that following phacoemulsification using the Infiniti machine.
