Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine near, intermediate and distance visual outcomes and patient satisfaction with unilateral implantation of the IC-8 (AcuFocus) intraocular lens.

Setting:

Hospital Universitario Donostia, San Sebastian, Spain

Methods:

Prospective clinical study including 20 cataractous eyes of 10 patients undergoing cataract surgery. The IC-8 IOL was implanted in the non-dominant eye and an aspheric monofocal IOL was implanted in the fellow eye of all patients. Uncorrected, distance-corrected and target-corrected distance (6 m), intermediate (67 cm) and near (40 cm) visual acuities (EDTRS letters), defocus curves and refractive data were recorded at 1 month, 3 months and 6 months after surgery. A Quality of Life (QoL) questionnaire was performed preoperatively and 3 months after surgery. Statistical analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel 2010.

Results:

Six months after surgery, mean binocular uncorrected VA (± standard deviation [SD]) was 60.4±3.86, 50.8±4.54 and 45.3±4.5, respectively. Binocular distance-corrected mean VA (±SD) was 61.6±3.13, 48.0±5.08 and 38.9±6.10, respectively. Target-corrected VA was 62.3±2.58, 48.7±7.09 and 44.6±7.11 for the respective distances. No patient needed glasses for distance visión after surgery, only one needed them often for near vision. All reported small or no limitation for near tasks without glasses. Day driving was considered easy or very easy by all patients who drove and only one of them considered night driving very difficult.

Conclusions:

In our experience, unilateral IC-8 IOL implantation brings a new surgical option for spectacle independence without changing surgical habits. It should be considered for patients who have been implanted with a monofocal IOL in their dominant eye.
