Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report visual performance of patients implanted monocularly with a new small aperture hydrophobic intraocular lens (IC-8 IOL) designed to increase the depth of field.

Setting:

Rothschild Foundation, Paris, France

Methods:

In a prospective observational study, we analyzed the visual and refractive outcomes of ten patients operated for cataract surgery and implanted monocularly with a single-piece hydrophobic acrylic IOL (IC-8). The IC-8 is designed with a centrally opaque annular mask measuring 3.23mm in total diameter with a 1.36mm central clear aperture. Classic phacoemulsification was performed and the IC-8 was inserted through a 3.5mm incision and positioned in the capsular bag. Preoperative and 3 months postoperative uncorrected distance and near visual acuities (UDVA, UNVA) and depth of focus were evaluated. Mean ± standard deviation visual acuity is reported in logMAR

Results:

The mean age of patients was 64 +/- 9 years old. Preoperative and 3 months post-operative UDVA was 0.43 ± 0.24 and 0.08 ± 0.04 respectively (p<0.001). Preoperative and 3 months post-operative UNVA was 0.68 ± 0.24 and 0.06 ± 0.09 (p < 0.001) respectively. Eighty percent and 90% of patients achieved 20/25 or better in the implant eye at distance and near respectively. No intra-operative complications were reported. One patient (10%) reported moderate difficulties for reading in dim light condition.

Conclusions:

Early results show that monocular IC-8 IOL implantation provides broad range of vision and very good acuity across all focal distances. No serious complications or side effects were reported in this small preliminary study.
