Abstract Details

Purpose:

Ongoing, prospective, non-randomized clinical evaluation of visual performance in patients implanted monocularly and binocularly with a small aperture hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lens (IC-8 IOL, AcuFocus Inc., Irvine, CA).

Setting:

Asian Eye Institute, Philippines

Methods:

Twelve cataract patients were implanted monocularly and ten patients were binocularly implanted with an IC-8 IOL. The fellow eyes of the monocular IC-8 patients were implanted with an aspheric monofocal IOL. The IC-8 IOL is a single-piece intraocular lens with a centrally located opaque annular mask. The mask has a 3.23 mm outer diameter, a 1.36 mm central aperture and contains 3,200 microperforations ranging in size from 7–10 microns. ETDRS charts were used to measure uncorrected distance, intermediate and near visual acuities. Additionally, defocus curves were measured at 6 months. Binocular visual acuities are reported in logMAR ± standard deviation.

Results:

Uncorrected binocular visual acuities for distance, intermediate and near are 0.01 ± 0.07 (20/20), 0.02 ± 0.11 (20/20), 0.08 ± 0.13 (20/25) and -0.03 ± 0.06 (20/18), -0.07 ± 0.05 (20/17), 0.02 ± 0.08 (20/20) for monocular and binocular implantation groups respectively. In the monocular group, 100% of patients achieved 20/32 or better in the implant eye at distance, intermediate and near respectively. In the binocular group, 100% of patients achieved J2 or better binocularly at near, J1 or better at intermediate and 20/25 or better at distance, respectively.

Conclusions:

Study results demonstrate that both monocular and binocular implantation of an IC-8 IOL provides excellent visual acuity across all distances and binocular implantation provides one line improvement over all distances.
