Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess and compare the efficacy and safety of bilateral symmetric implantation of two different multifocal intraocular lenses (IOL): the AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® multifocal +2,50 D (SV25T0, Alcon, USA) and the TECNIS® Simfony® ZXR00 extended depth of focus multifocal IOL (Abbott, USA); after cataract surgery.

Setting:

Ophthalmology Department, Hospital CUF, Porto

Methods:

Prospective, randomized clinical trial, of patients submitted to refractive bilateral lens exchange with implantation of a multifocal IOL from group 1 (AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® SV25T0) or group 2 (TECNIS® Simfony® ZXR00). The minimum follow-up was 6 months with the following outcome measures: monocular and binocular, corrected and uncorrected distance, intermediate (70 cm) and near (40 cm) visual acuities, manifest refraction, binocular defocus curve and contrast sensitivity at photopic and scotopic luminance levels. A preloaded capsular tension ring (Morcher®) was implanted in all cases. IOL power was calculated using partial coherence laser interferometry (Zeiss IOL Master®; Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany).

Results:

A total of 52 eyes of 26 patients were included and followed from 6 to 12 months. Postoperative monocular uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuities (Snellen decimal) were 0,85 ± 0,12 and 1,15 ± 0,16 for group 1 and 0,88 ± 0,16 and 0,97 ± 0,06 for group 2 (p>0,05). Binocular distance corrected visual acuity for 80 cm and 40 cm were 0,98 ± 0,19 and 0,61 ± 0,21 for Group 1 and 0,97 ± 0,06 and 0,55 ± 0,07 for group 2 (p>0,05), respectively. The binocular defocus curve and contrast sensitivity results were similar in both groups (p>0,05).

Conclusions:

The AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® multifocal +2,50 D (SV25T0) and the TECNIS® Simfony® ZXR00 extended depth of focus multifocal IOL showed similar visual and refractive outcomes after implantation. We observed a superior visual improvement for intermediate distance with both IOL’s when compared to a standard monofocal IOL but insufficient visual acuity for near tasks when compared to a diffractive bifocal or trifocal IOL with higher addition for near.
