Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the outcomes of femtosecond laser-assisted anterior capsulotomy in children with cataract

Setting:

Ufa Eye Research Institute

Methods:

Femtosecond laser-assisted stage of cataract surgery using the VICTUS ™ Femtosecond Laser Platform was performed in 31 children (32 eyes) aged from 20 months to 16 years. Femtosecond laser-assisted stage of the operation in children aged up 10 years was performed under general anesthesia, above 11 years of age - under local anesthesia. Under general anesthesia, phacoaspiration of lenticular masses with IOL implantation, followed by the center and the posterior capsulectomy and anterior vitrectomy were performed. The follow-up period was from 3 to 20 months. Set point diameter of the anterior capsulorhexis ranged from 3.75 to 5.0 mm.

Results:

In children younger than 3 years of age the laser interface does not suit to palpebral fissure that does not allow for the achievement of docking and placement of the suction ring. In these cases (9 eyes) femtosecond laser-assisted step was conducted without the suction ring. The maximum increase in the diameter of the anterior capsulotomy was observed in children under the age of 4 and totaled 0.75 -1.0 mm. At the same time the increase of the diameter of the anterior capsulotomy was not observed in the diffuse cataract and anterior capsule induration.

Conclusions:

The usage of the femtosecond laser to form the anterior capsulotomy in children provides undeniable advantages and safety of the whole procedure. Sizes of the increase of the anterior capsulotomy in children depends not only on age but also on the form of a cataract and condition of the anterior capsule of the lens. Special interfaces are required to perform the femtosecond laser-assisted anterior capsulotomy in infants.
