Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate outcome of Lasik in pediatric age (4 to 12 years) with unilateral and bilateral high myopia and amblyopia.

Setting:

Mehta International Eye Institute, Mumbai, India.

Methods:

A retrospective study including 38 patients (4 to 14 yrs) from the Institute’s record was done from Jan 1998 to Jan 2014.Out of 18, 28 were having unilateral high myopia and 5 had bilateral. Myopia was in range of -7.0 to -11.0 diopter spherical equivalent. All patients had amblyopia. Esotropia was present in 17 cases. All patients had an intensive work up for visual acuity, subjective refraction, cycloplegic refraction, anterior and posterior segment examination, corneal topography, ultrasound pachymetry, aberrometry. Lasik was performed in all for balancing refraction and follow-up was done for minimum period of two years.

Results:

34 of the patients improved with at least 2 lines on Snellen acuity chart within 3 months with or without correction. Out of 17 patients with exotropia, 9 improved after Lasik alone. 14 in total improved with Lasik and exercises, and 3 had to undergo exotropia correction. All patients were having stable corneal topography in follow-up done for minimum 2 years.

Conclusions:

Refractive Lasik does seem to improve amblyopia despite all that has been said to the contrary and should be a recognized form of treatment to enhance the visual acuity.
