Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the refractive, visual outcomes and efficacy of Laser-in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK) and Laser in situ keratomileusis with simultaneous high energy corneal cross-linking (LASIK-Xtra) on moderate to high astigmatism correction with non-wavefront-guided aberration-free ablation profile.

Setting:

Muscat Eye Laser Center, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman.

Methods:

In this retrospective study all myopic patients with a 1 year follow-up and a cylinder of ≥2,50D were analysed. All LASIK aspheric treatments with a non-wavefront-guided aberration-free ablation profile with the Amaris 1050RS (Schwind eye-tech-solutions), The simultaneous high-energy corneal cross-linking procedure performed with the KXL System (Avedro). Standard examinations and preoperative and postoperative wavefront analyses were preformed for LASIK and LASIK-Xtra.

Results:

55 eyes of 31 patients were included. Mean preoperative spherical equivalent (SE) -4.58D and -2.98D in the group LASIK-Xtra(n=12) and LASIK(n=43), Mean postoperative SE was -0.21D and -0.08D in the LASIK-Xtra and LASIK groups, with 83%, and 100% within 0.5D of the target respectively. Significantly improvement (p<0.05) on Sphere, Cylinder, SE, UDVA and CDVA in both groups. CDVA improved in 50% of eyes, and 61% in the group LASIK-Xtra and LASIK group. In the LASIK-Xtra group 8% of eyes lost 1 line of CDVA and 0% in the LASIK group. No clinically relevant changes in HOA’s in both groups.

Conclusions:

LASIK and LASIK-Xtra using a non-wavefront-guided aberration-free ablation profile yielded excellent visual outcomes. In both groups the preoperative astigmatism was reduced to subclinical values. Both groups are effective in terms of UDVA, CDVA, spherical and astigmatic correction, and preserving HOA. However, the LASIK group was slightly more close to emmetropia.
