Methods:

This retrospective study involved keratoconus patients from different regions of Azerbaijan based on the data from the National Eye Center named after academician Zarifa Aliyeva, Baku, Azerbaijan, between March 2005 and November 2015. Patient’s age, gender, and area of origin within Azerbaijan were analyzed.

Results:

The study included 1100 patients. Most of the patients were aged 21–25 years (14%), 26–30 years (18%), 31–35 years (18%), 36–40 years (16%), and 41–45 years (14%). A minority of patients were aged 17–20 years (2%), 46–50 years (9%), and 51-55 years (9%). In terms of gender, 53% of cases were male and 47% were female. In terms of region, 47% were from the eastern region of Azerbaijan, 19% were from the southern region, 18% and 9% were from the central and western region. The smallest amount were from the northern region (7%).

Conclusions:

The overall distribution of keratoconus patients was almost equal between men and women, with a higher incidence in patients aged 26–35 years, and prevalence in eastern region of Azerbaijan.
