Abstract Details

Purpose:

Assessing the quality of vision and its impact on the daily life of patients after corneal transplantation

Setting:

Ophthalmologic department of Med VI university hospital in Marrakesh (Morocco)

Methods:

We perform a longitudinal prospective study of a series of 57 patients who underwent penetrating keratoplasty, listed between January 2011 and March 2015. All patients underwent a complete ophthalmic examination before surgery and monthly after keratoplasty. Information is collected before and two years after surgery using VF14 survey (for quality of vision) and SF12 survey (for physical and mental health). Data analyses were performed using SPSS 16.0 software. The significance level was 0.05.

Results:

Fifty-seven patients participated in our study. The mean age was 36.5 years. Fifty-six patients were male. The indications of keratoplasty were dominated by keratoconus (44%) followed by bullous keratopathy (17.5%). Median best-corrected preoperative visual acuity was 1.1 +/- 0.16 and it improved to 0.34+/- 0.31 in postoperatively. Median best-corrected visual acuity was 0.62 +/- 0.49 in the best eye. The average of astigmatism was 3D. A significant improvement in visual function and quality of life was objectified after surgery. It increases from 53.5 to 81.92 for VF14 and from 55.28 to 85.79 for SF12.

Conclusions:

In our practice, it is very important to evaluate visual quality of life of patient with poor vision and its modification after surgery. in this study, surgery helped patients with corneal diseases to improve vision-related quality of life.
