Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate the visual performance of patients with bilateral implantation of the TECNIS Symfony toric intraocular lens (IOL).

Setting:

Private Eye Clinic in Haugesund, Norway

Methods:

Thirty patients with bilateral regular corneal astigmatism of 0.75 to 2.60 D were enrolled in this mono-centered prospective study. Emmetropia was targeted in all patients. Follow-up visits were scheduled 1 day, 1 week and 3 months after bilateral implantation of the TECNIS Symfony toric IOL. Uncorrected (UDVA) and best-corrected (CDVA) monocular and binocular visual acuity as well as binocular uncorrected intermediate (UIVA) and near (UNVA) visual acuity were documented. Other study parameters include subjective refraction, decentration/tilt, photic phenomena, spectacle use (distance, intermediate, near), patient and surgeon satisfaction. Visual acuity values are presented in logMAR.

Results:

Refractive lens exchange was performed in 40% and cataract surgery in 60% of the patients. Mean 3-months binocular logMAR UDVA and CDVA were -0.04 ± 0.08 and -0.06 ± 0.05, respectively. Binocular logMAR UIVA and UNVA were 0.04 ± 0.07 and 0.04 ± 0.1, respectively. Spherical equivalent was within ±0.25 in 75% of the eyes. Spectacle independence was high at all distances, with all but one patient using glasses never or occasionally at far, intermediate or near, respectively. Only one patient reported visual symptoms (problems when driving at night). No serious per and postoperative complication occurred in this series of study subjects.

Conclusions:

The TECNIS Symfony toric extended range of vision IOL provides good functional vision across all distances. Spectacle independence was high at far, intermediate and near distance
