Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the outcomes in contrast sensitivity of LASIK with an aspheric micro-monovision protocol in patients with presbyopia

Setting:

Departamento de OftalmologĂ­a. Hospital Universitario Quiron Madrid. Universidad Europea de Madrid

Methods:

A prospective, non compartive case series included 100 eyes from 50 patients with presbyopia who where treated with Presby-LASIK. The CRS-Master software was used to generate ablation profiles for the MEL 80 excimer laser (Carl Zeis Meditec). Patients were classified in three groups according to spherical equivalent refractio: Group I (hyperopia), group II (myopia < 3 D) and group 3 (> 3 D). The contrast sensitivity was measured monocularly by means of CSV-1000, VectorVision Inc, preoperatively and 6 months after the surgery. Spatial frequencies studied were 3,6,12 and 18 cycles per degree (cpd)

Results:

The total mean spatial frecuency values in three groups were preoperatively 4.67,4.88,4.81 and 5.19 at 3,6,12 and 18 cycles/degree. After 6 month follow-up the values were 4.91,4.88, 4.90 and 5.01 respectively.No statiscally significant differences were found except to 3 cycles/degree values (p =0.017). No significant difference was found in spatial frecuencies in groups I and II. A small increase occurred at 18 cpg (p=0.021) in group III

Conclusions:

The aspheric micro-monovision protocol for treating ammetropic patients was a well-tolerated and there is a small increase in contrast sensitivity at 6-month at 18 cpg in moderate myopic patients
