Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the accuracy of CHULA toric marker application version 1 (CUTM-1) in iOS system for marking corneal axis.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Thai Red Cross Society, Bangkok, Thailand

Methods:

An application for corneal axis marking was developed to use on iOS system. This application could verify the horizontal alignment, assigned axis and other anatomical landmarks. A mobile phone had to be attached on the slit-lamp eyepiece. Thereafter, the eye was focused from limbus to limbus and was captured via CUTM-1 application. Horizontal and axis deviation of two procedures, which were CUTM-1 application and a common slit-lamp axis marking method, were analyzed by using image analysis to evaluate the accuracy and compare to standard photograph. Ten of volunteers were enrolled in the study.

Results:

Decentration of the slit-lamp method and CUTM-1 application were 0.34 ± 0.42 mm and 0.28 ± 0.18 mm, respectively. Deviation of the horizontal line by slit-lamp method and CUTM-1 application were 2.00 ± 1.90 degrees and 1.10 ± 1.00 degrees (p= .058). Deviation of the assigned axis by slit-lamp method was 2.0 ± 3.0 degrees, while there was no deviation by CUTM-1 method.

Conclusions:

CHULA toric marker application version 1 for iOS system is accurate for marking the cornea axis. It showed no axis deviation comparing to the commonly used 3-step method. This innovative application is accurate, easy and user-friendly for modern ophthalmic surgery practice.
