Abstract Details

Purpose:

Prospective evaluation of visual and refractive parameters, defocus curve, contrast sensitivity and glare and halo’s one and three months postop in a group of ten patients (n = 20 eyes) implanted with the ReSTOR IQ PanOptix multifocal lens after cataract surgery. Results are compared with previous results of a RCT comparing the FineVision MicroF and ReSTOR IQ +2.5D MIOLs.

Setting:

University Eye Clinic Maastricht, Maastricht University Medical Center, Maastricht, The Netherlands.

Methods:

Data from ten cataract surgery patients (n=20 eyes) implanted with the ReSTOR IQ PanOptix MIOL (Alcon, Fort Worth, USA) was collected for prospective analysis. Mean preoperative age was 60.38±8.42. One and three months postoperatively, patients were scheduled for a study visit including uncorrected and distance corrected distance (UDVA/CDVA), intermediate (UIVA/DCIVA) and near (UNVA/DCNVA) visual acuity measurements, binocular defocus curve and contrast sensitivity measurements. All measurements were performed under photopic conditions. The results were compared to the results of a previous RCT performed at the same center comparing the FineVision MicroF and ReSTOR IQ +2.5D MIOLs six months postoperatively.

Results:

Mean LogMAR UDVA, UIVA and UNVA was 0.05±0.15, 0.18±0.14 and 0.17±0.14 LogMAR respectively 3 months postoperatively in the PanOptix group (p>0.05). Mean LogMAR CDVA, DCIVA and DCNVA was -0.03±0.13, 0.17±0.15 and 0.14±0.12 LogMAR respectively 3 months postoperatively in the PanOptix group (p>0.05). Mean spherical equivalent (SE) 3 months postop was 0.07±0.41D in the PanOptix group (p>0.05). The defocus curve at 3 months showed a continuous range of defocus, with a VA of ≥ 0.2 LogMAR from -3.5 to +1.0D and a significantly better performance at -1.5D (p<0.01).

Conclusions:

The ReSTOR IQ PanOptix MIOL shows good uncorrected and corrected visual acuity at the intermediate distance with an expected best intermediate reading distance of 67 cm. The PanOptix MIOLs performed significantly better at a -1.5D of defocus (p<0.01), with less reported glare and halo’s.
