Evaluation of visual acuity, reading performance and contrast sensitivity in presbyopic patients after bilateral implantation of AT LISA tri 839MP, AcrySof IQ PanOptix or TECNIS Symfony intraocular lenses

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the outcome of a two trifocal intraocular lenses(IOLs), AT LISA tri 839MP and AcrySof IQ PanOptix, and an Extended Depth Of Focus IOL(Tecnis Symfony), after bilateral implantation in presbyopic patients, in terms of far, intermediate and near visual acuity, reading performance and contrast sensitivity.

Eye Clinic, University of Florence, Florence, Italy

Methods:

60 patients (75.2± 3.2 years old) underwent bilateral cataract surgery with AT LISA tri 839MP(n=20), AcrySof IQ PanOptix (n=20) or Tecnis Symfony (n=20) IOLs implantation. A complete ophthalmological examination, including visual acuity (far, intermediate, near), subjective refraction, photopic and mesopic contrast sensitivity, photopic and mesopic reading performance with MNREAD Acuity Charts, patient satisfaction and IOL tilt and centration assessment was performed preoperatively and 1 and 3 months postoperatively.

Results:

At the one and three-month follow up visits, all patients had significant improvement in uncorrected distance, intermediate and near visual acuity, corrected distance visual acuity, and distance-corrected intermediate and near visual acuity. The trifocal IOLs provided a significantly better near visual acuity(p<0.05). At the three-month visit all patients showed good contrast sensitivity and reading performance without correction. The contrast sensitivity was slightly better in Tecnis Symfony IOL-implanted patients (p>0.05).

Conclusions:

The three evaluated IOLs showed good intermediate and near visual results, providing intermediate and near spectacle independence to presbyopic patients after cataract surgery in their everyday life.
