Abstract Details

Purpose:

The intent of this retrospective analysis was to evaluate the performance of SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) and assess the desired refractive result addressing all the safety parameters

Setting:

The Eye Foundation, Coimbatore, India

Methods:

40 eyes of 20 patients, 18-43 yrs, were analyzed with a follow up of 6 months. All eyes underwent SMILE with VISUMAX femtosecond laser platform. Stable corneal topography and hysteresis was noted preoperatively except 2 eyes with borderline CCT. The refractive error ranged from -0.25Dsph to -7.75Dsph and -0.50Dcyl to -3.00Dcyl. The preoperative CCT ranged from 483 to 589 microns. Lenticule thickness ranged from 54 to 148 microns with optic zone of 6.00mm. The predictability, safety and efficacy, visual outcomes ,contrast sensitivity and topographic assessment were done at 6 weeks and 6 months postoperatively and evaluated. Probable Complications were also compiled.

Results:

Residual error ranged from -0.50Dcyl to -0.75Dcyl in 2 eyes which was gratifying keeping in mind the refractive range treated. 90% of eyes had maintained BCVA. 95% of eyes had predictable refractive error correction. Efficacy of the procedure indicates that 100% had the desired visual results. 100% of eyes had predictable residual beds. 92.5% of eyes had good tear film stability. Post operatively topography showed a well centered treatment. Subjectively, all patients were comfortable the next day Difficulty lenticule separation in a few did not have any post op inflammation or any visual impact

Conclusions:

The safety, efficacy and predictable visual outcomes of Smile procedures is encouraging to position it in the Refractive Surgical armamentarium for myopic corrections.
