Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study the time course of interface healing and find its correlation with visual recovery after ReLEx SMILE.

Setting:

Nethradhama Super Speciality Eye Hospital, Bangalore

Methods:

78 eyes of 39 eligible patients with mean age of 25.7 yrs who underwent bilateral ReLEx SMILE procedure were evaluated. On postoperative day 1, 15 and 90, retro-illumination photographs were taken after dilatation. The granularity of interface as seen in these photographs was graded into 5 grades(gd) of severity – gd 0(clear), gd 1(mild), gd 2(moderate), gd 3(severe) and gd 4(very severe with bowmans folds). The grade of interface healing was then correlated with UDVA, contrast sensitivity and aberrations at every visit.

Results:

On day 1, 55.1 % eyes had gd 3 granularity, 44.9 % gd 2 ,while none of the eyes had grades 0, 1 or 4. At 3 months, majority of the eyes (97.3 %) had improved to gd 0 and 1. Correspondingly, the UDVA improved from mean LogMAR of -0.063 and -0.079 at day 1 to -0.085 at 3 months. HOA improved from 0.169µ at day 1 to 0.152 µ at 3 months. Contrast sensitivity scores were also seen to be improving through the complete follow up period and were comparable to preoperative scores at the last follow up. Mean MTF value at 3 month was comparable to the pre-op MTF values.

Conclusions:

Interface healing may be positively correlated with visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and aberrations after ReLEx SMILE procedure. The interface takes approximately 3 months for healing, during which there is constant improvement in quality of vision.
