Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate trifocal toric IOL to manage astigmatism and near vision after cataract surgery. To detect the % of toric IOLs needed to achive emmetropia

Setting:

C.M.A Centro di Microchirurgia Ambulatoriale, Via Donizetti 24, Monza (Milan)

Methods:

Eyes with cataract and corneal astigmatism (1.47 ± 0.55 D) had AT LISA tri toric 939MP implantation. IOL calculations were performed using Z-CALC online calculator, taking into account the surgeon SIA. IOL axis alignment during surgery was accurately performed. Outcomes measurements were subjective refraction, corneal astigmatism using ATLAS™ 9000 Corneal Topography System, visual acuity, contrast sensitivity using OPTEC 6500. Postoperatively, distance (5m) near (40cm) and intermediate (80 cm) visual acuity, and contrast sensitivity were measured.

Results:

Study included 68 eyes from 43 patients for toric trifocal IOLs (mean age 67.01 years ± 12.29 [SD]). Preoperatively, mean UCVA and SE were 20/75 ± 41.47 and -0.80 D ± 3.42 respectively. Patients presented with a mean corneal cylinder and mean refractive cylinder of 1.47 D ± 0.55 and 0.96 D ± 0.94 respectively. 3 years postoperatively, mean monocular UCVA and BCVA were 20/25 ± 5.55 and 20/23 ± 5.16 respectively for far vision. Intermediate monocular UCVA was 20/30 ± 7.75. Near monocular UCVA was 20/27 ± 3.61 . The mean residual refractive cylinder was 0.33 ± 0.41. Photopic contrast sensitivity were within the normal range for lower spatial frequencies.

Conclusions:

AT LISA tri toric 939MP is an advanced generation multifocal IOL preferably indicated for bilateral implantation. Clinical outcomes indicate that this is an effective multifocal design to correct corneal astigmatism and to achieve emmetropia, intermediate and near vision. We apply toricIOLs correction when we detect 0,75 diopters on corneal map.
