Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate and compare the clinical outcomes of Precizon toric intraocular lens (IOL) (Optec Inc.) and Tecnis toric IOL (Abbott Medical Optics Inc.).

Setting:

Samsung medical center, Korea

Methods:

This randomized, comparative study includes 40 eyes (Precizon 20 eyes vs Tecnis 20 eyes) of 31 patients with a visually significant cataract and corneal astigmatism undergoing cataract surgery. We evaluated the changes in uncorrected distant visual acuity(UDVA), corrected distant visual acuity(CDVA), uncorrected intermediate visual acuity(UIVA), refraction, residual astigmatism, rotation of the IOL axis and higher order aberrations at 3 months postoperatively. Power vector analysis was used to analyze astigmatism.

Results:

Both groups showed significant reduction in refractive astigmatism after the surgery (Precizon: -1.07±0.86 D to -0.31±0.30 D, p= 0.03, Tecnis: -1.83±1.29 D to -0.41±0.33 D, p=0.01). There was no significant difference in postoperative UDVA, CDVA and residual astigmatism between two groups although better tendency of UIVA was observed in Precizon. Significant difference in rotation of toric IOL axis was denoted (Precizon: 1.71˚±0.94, Tecnis: 2.75˚±0.54, p=0.02). The spherical aberration was significantly lower in the Precizon compared to Tecnis group.

Conclusions:

IOLs in both groups promoted good postoperative UDVA, CDVA and refractive results. Postoperative rotational stability was better in the Precizon group at 3 month follow up.
