Abstract Details

Purpose:

Biometry after corneal refractive surgery is still challenging. The main problem is the relative change of the anterior to the posterior surface. RELEX-SMILE is a relatively new technique for correcting myopia and astigmatism. However, biometry after RELEX-SMILE will be challenging for cataract surgeons. Herein we analyzed the data of patients after uncomplicated RELEX-SMILE.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Medical University Graz & Ardjomand Eye Surgery, Graz; Austria

Methods:

10 patients (20 eyes) underwent uneventful RELEX-SMILE (Zeiss, Germany) between April and September 2015. All patients underwent Scheimpflug imaging , refraction and IOL-biometry (IOL-Master, Zeiss, Germany). The average preoperative myopia was -6,6 D.

Results:

The average refractive shift was 6,25 D. The average change in corneal power was 4,6 D. Comparing the Equivalent-K-Readings (4.5 mm) with the clinical-history method, there was still a difference of 1.4 D.

Conclusions:

Corneal topography and change in the relation between the anterior and posterior surface seem to be different in eyes after RELEX-SMILE and LASIk/PRK. Surgeons should be careful using the established biometry formulas published for LASIK/PRK in eyes which underwent RELEX-SMILE.
