Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the anterior and posterior segment safety of intracamerally injected moxifloxacin and cefuroxime for endophthalmitis prophylaxis in cataract surgery.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Selcuk University, Konya, Turkey

Methods:

Eyes received either intracameral moxifloxacin (250 μg/0.050 mL) or intracameral cefuroxime (1mg/0.1ml) at the end of uneventful phacoemulsification surgery. The visual acuity, corneal clarity, central corneal thickness, anterior chamber reaction, macular thickness and choroidal thickness were evaluated preoperatively, at postoperative day 1 and day 3.

Results:

48 eyes of 48 patients (24 in each group) were enrolled in the study. Visual acuity increased in all patients; there was no statistical difference in terms of preoperative, postoperative first and third day corneal clarity, anterior chamber reaction between two groups. Preoperative and postoperative measurements of central corneal thickness, macular and choroidal thickness did not show significant statistical difference in either group.

Conclusions:

Intracamerally used moxifloxacin (250 μg/0.050 mL) and cefuroxime (1mg/0.1ml) are equally safe agents for prophylaxis of endophthalmitis in uneventful phacoemulsification surgery.
