Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare posterior capsule opacification (PCO), 5 years postoperatively in contralateral eyes with a single-piece hydrophobic acrylic and 1 of 2 single-piece hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lenses (IOLs) with different configurations.

Setting:

Raghudeep Eye Hospital, Ahmedabad, India

Methods:

This prospective,randomized clinical trial included 68 patients,randomly assigned to one of two groups.One eye of each patient received a single-piece hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lens(IOL) and the other eye received a hydrophilic acrylic IOL with different configurations.In Group 1,one eye received AcrySof IOL(Alcon Laboratories,USA) and the fellow eye received Akreos Adapt IOL (Bausch & Lomb,USA).In Group 2,one eye received AcrySof IOL and the fellow eye received Rayner C-flex IOL(570C,Rayner Intraocular Lenses).Evaluation of Posterior Capsule Opacification (EPCO area and EPCO score) was compared within capsulorhexis margin and central 3mm optic using digital photographs at 1 month, 1, 2, 3, and 5 years.

Results:

There were no significant differences in PCO values at baseline between 3 IOLs. Within capsulorhexis margin and central 3 mm optic, in both Groups, incidence of PCO was significantly less in eyes with AcrySof IOLs when compared with Akreos Adapt and Rayner C-flex IOLs at 1,3, and 5 years.At 5 years,PCO scores in both groups were:Group 1: EPCO Score: 0.00±0.02Vs 0.16±0.22 P<0.001;EPCO Area: 0.03±0.05 vs 0.15±0.19, P<0.001. Group 2: EPCO Score: 0.30±0.40 vs 1.50±1.31,P<0.001; EPCO Area: 0.01±0.07 vs 0.03±0.09,P<0.04. Nd:YAG capsulotomy rates was 7(20%)eyes with Akreos Adapt IOL and 5(15.2%) with Rayner C-flex IOL but none in AcrySof IOL at 5 years.

Conclusions:

The results of our study comparing three single-piece acrylic IOLs of different materials,optic designs and haptic configurations showed that the single-piece hydrophobic acrylic IOL was associated with lower PCO values at 5 years postoperatively as compared with the 2 single-piece hydrophilic IOL models.
