Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine if there are any effects on Visual Performance of PCO development and Subsequent YAG Posterior Capsulotomy on Visual Performance of the Symfony IOL in comparison to the At Lisa Trifocal IOL.

Setting:

Optimax and Ultralase Eye Clinics UK

Methods:

Retrospective review of 500 consecutive cases of eyes implanted with either the Symfony IOL or the AT Lisa IOL. Distance and Near Visual acuity, Refraction and patient Satisfaction were noted pre and post Yag Capsulotomy. In addition rate of Yag Capsulotomy and time to capsulotomy from initial surgery were also noted. Minimum Follow up was 9 months psot surgery.

Results:

27% of Symfony patients required Yag capsulotomy vs 35% of AT Lisa patients. Average time to Yag capsulotomy was 30.7 weeks +/-17 weeks in the Symfony group vs 26.8 weeks +/-17 weeks in the AT Lisa group.Distance UCVA (decimal) was 0.93 +/- 0.20 in Symfony vs 0.93+/-0.16 AT Lisa group prior to PCO development. Post Yag DUCVA was 0.76+/-0.28 vs 0.72 +/- 0.17 respectively. Near VA pre PCO was 0.6+/-0.22 in the Symfony vs 0.59+/-0.12 in the AT Lisa group. Post Yag NUVA was 0.49+/-0.22 vs 0.46+/-0.22.

Conclusions:

The AT Lisa IOL had a higher frequency of PCO development. The PCO developed at an earlier stage than the Symfony IOL. Similarly there was a greater reduction in uncorrected distance and near visual acuity post yag capsulotomy in the AT Lisa group vs the Symfony group. There was no significant change in refractive error post Yag in either group. Yag capsulotomy may induce IOL decentration and/or tilt which can cause a reduction in visual performance. This seems to affect the AT Lisa IOL more than it does the Symfony IOL.
