Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report the indications and clinical outcomes of capsular tension ring (CTR) implantations in the consecutive cataract surgeries performed at a private clinic over a fourteen-year period.

Setting:

Entani Eye Clinic, Hyogo, Japan.

Methods:

This retrospective study included 200 eyes of 173 patients who had cataract surgery with CTR implantation in 23,903 surgeries performed at a single private clinic from January 2002 to December 2015. CTRs were implanted with or without capsule retractors. The indications and clinical outcomes of CTR implantation were evaluated.

Results:

The indications were pseudoexfoliation syndrome (66 eyes, 33.0%), shallow anterior chamber (26 eyes, 13.0%), laser iridotomy (24 eyes, 12.0%), weak zonule (24 eyes, 12.0%), trauma (17 eyes, 8.5%), phacodonesis (16 eyes, 8.0%), zonular rupture (12 eyes, 6.0%), atopic dermatitis (9 eyes, 4.5%), retinitis pigmentosa (3 eyes, 1.5%), high myopia (1 eye, 0.5%), vitrectomy (1 eye, 0.5%), and mature cataract (1 eye, 0.5%). One eye which had CTR implantation without retractors required scleral suture fixation 4.4 years later.

Conclusions:

From our study, the rate of CTR use was 0.84%. CTR implantation contributes to the prevention of zonular damage. Implantation of CTR with retractors may be better in maintaining zonular stability during cataract surgery.
