Session Title: Combined Cataract Surgery: Techniques/Practice Styles

Session Date/Time: Tuesday 13/09/2016 | 14:00-16:00

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To demonstrate that cataract surgery can be completed safely and efficiently without the use of ultrasound or femtosecond laser in 1 to 4+ nuclear sclerotic cataracts by utilizing the Depenbusch Technique (DepTech).

Setting:

In this IRB approved study 50 consecutive 1 to 4+ nuclear sclerotic cataracts were completed in various surgery centers in the Phoenix, Arizona area using DepTech with no ultrasound or laser assistance using the I&A settings for removal.

Methods:

50 consecutive qualified patients undergoing cataract surgery were observed using DepTech. DepTech is a method utilizing a new concept of nuclear disassembly. A chopper, a proper phaco tip and a high venture vacuum were used in the I&A settings to disassemble the nucleus in a posterior to anterior fashion allowing the removal of the fragments without the use of ultrasound. Parameters of different aspects of the surgery were captured: elapsed phaco time, elapsed time of nuclear removal and volume of BSS used during nuclear removal.

Results:

All 50 cataract surgeries were completed using DepTech with no ultrasound and no laser on nuclear sclerotic cataracts ranging from 1 to 4+. Average elapsed phaco time: 0:00. Average elapsed nuclear removal time: X:XX. average BSS volume used during nuclear removal: X:XXcc's.

Conclusions:

The use of 'DepTech' offers an alternative to the use of lasers and ultrasound during cataract surgery.
