Purpose:
Clinical evaluation of functional results and quality of vision in patients with maculopathy after implantation of a rotation-asymetric bifocal IOL with a near-segment of +8.0 D.

International Vision Correction Research Centre (IVCRC), Department of Ophthalmology, University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany
Methods:
Sixteen eyes of 14 patients with cataract and age-related macular degeneration were enrolled in this prospective clinical study. The Lentis High-Add LS-313 MF80 (Oculentis) was implanted monocularly in the eye with better vision in 12 patients and binocularly in 2 patients after phacoemulsification. Follow-up examinations were performed between 3 months and 2.5 years after surgery including subjective refraction, ETDRS uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity, uncorrected, distance corrected and bestcorrected near visual acuity, determination of magnification needed to read standard printed text, reading acuity and speed (Radner Reading Charts), halometry with a Halo and Glare Simulator Software and a questionnaire.
Results:
Preliminary results show that median CDVA increased from 20/100 [0.2 dec.] (range 20/400 [0.05 dec.] to 20/63 [0.32 dec.]) preoperatively to 20/80 [0.25 dec.] (range 20/400 [0.05 dec.] to 20/50 [0.4 dec.]) postoperatively. Median postoperative uncorrected reading acuity was 20/44 [0.45 dec.] (range: 20/63 [0.32 dec.] to 20/20 [1.0 dec.]) at a median distance of 14 cm (range 10 to 35 cm). In one case postoperative UNVA increased to 20/20 [1.0 dec.] at 15 cm. Overall patient satisfaction was high and most patients reported better ability to perform everyday tasks.
Conclusions:
The first clinical evaluation of this new IOL with a high-magnification segment for patients with age-related macular degeneration shows promising results. The near addition of the IOL leads to a 1.5- to 2-fold magnification and allows increased independence from magnifying vision aids and facilitates everyday tasks, such as cooking, shopping and in some cases reading.
