Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate visual and refractive outcome as well as quality of life in patients receiving cataract surgery with implantation of a non diffractive bifocal intraocular lens (IOL) with +1.5D near addition for extended depth of focus (EDOF).

Setting:

Prospective, non-randomized, non-comparative clinical study, Department of Ophthalmology, Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich, Germany.

Methods:

In an ongoing study 20 eyes of 10 patients diagnosed with age-related cataract and total corneal astigmatism below 1.0D underwent cataract surgery with bilateral implantation of a bifocal intraocular EDOF lens (LENTIS Comfort, LS-313 MF15; OCULENTIS GmbH, Berlin, Germany) with +1.5D near addition. Preoperative and up to three months postoperative uncorrected and best-corrected distance (UCDVA, CDVA), intermediate (UCIVA, DCIVA) and near (UCNVA, DCNVA) visual acuity were evaluated. Furthermore, a defocus curve was generated to analyse the full optical power range of the EDOF lens. A standardized quality of life questionnaire was used for analysing patient comfort.

Results:

Preliminary data in follow-up showed a gain in visual acuity for UDVA from 0.54 to 0.08, for CDVA from 0.30 to 0.04 and for UCIVA from 0.73 to 0.29 logMAR, CIVA from 0.59 to 0.25 logMAR, respectively. Defocus curve represents on average a smooth enhanced depth of focus with a range of 4D with visual acuity better than 0.19 logMAR. In the analysed questionnaire optical quality reached a mean value of 7.5 on a scale of 0 to 100 with 0 as very good. Only two out of 10 patients described optical phenomena such as “halo” and “starbusts”.

Conclusions:

The LENTIS Comfort as a low addition bifocal EDOF lens shows high visual acuity at far distance and good visual acuity at intermediate distance. All patients are very satisfied and describe low optical phenomena but spectacle dependence for reading. EDOF lenses are for every day use with high comfort, but like for multifocal IOL, exact patient selection is needed.
