Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the optical quality of segmental multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) with different near additions.
Setting:
The David J Apple International Laboratory for Ocular Pathology, University Eye Hospital Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany
Methods:
We analyzed the LENTIS MplusX LS-313 MF30, LENTIS Comfort LS-313 MF15 and LENTIS High Add IOL MF80 (Oculentis, Germany) with a power of 21D for distance using the OptiSpheric optical bench (Trioptics, Germany). The lenses have the same optical design but different powers in their near segment: The MF30 has a near addition of +3.0D and the MF80 a near addition of +8.0D (for patients with a macular scar) while the MF15 has a +1.5D addition to improve vision at intermediate distances. We evaluated the modulation transfer function area (MTFA) and the Strehl ratio using a 3mm and 4.5mm aperture.
Results:
The MTFA at the far focus was 33.37/30.81/51.57 (MF15/MF30/MF80) for a 3mm aperture and 24.51/22.50/43.06 for a 4.5mm aperture. At the intermediate focus, the MTFA was 29.83/15.03/6.26 for a 3mm and 24.39/8.04/3.26 for a 4.5mm aperture. At the near focus the MTFA was 9.77/21.38/33.08 for a 3mm and 5.07/22.67/32.77 for a 4.5mm aperture. Strehl was 0.34/0.29/0.52 for a 3mm and 0.23/0.22/0.43 for a 4.5mm aperture at the far focus. At the intermediate focus, Strehl was 0.30/0.16/0.07 for a 3mm and 0.25/0.09/0.03 for a 4.5mm aperture. Strehl was 0.10/0.22/0.33 for a 3mm and 0.05/0.23/0.33 for a 4.5mm aperture for near.
Conclusions:
At the far focus, the MF80 showed the best and the MF30 the worst results. At the intermediate focus, the MF15 performed best and the MF80 performed worst. In the near range, the MF80 achieved the best and the MF15 the worst results. The broad range of available near additions in multifocal IOLs allows the surgeon to choose the right IOL for the patients’ needs.
