Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study the safety and efficacy of cataract removal and refractive lens exchange (RLE) with insertion of a diffractive quadrafocal intraocular lens (IOL)

Setting:

Private ophthalmic surgery centre Vision Eye Institute, Australia

Methods:

Cataract extraction or RLE was performed with implantation of the Alcon IQ Panoptix IOL. Pre and postoperative refractive and visual parameters were recorded and evaluated. The incidence of intraoperative and postoperative complications was also reported.

Results:

The IOL was implanted in 66 eyes of 35 patients. Mean postoperative spherical equivalent refraction was -0.10 ± 0.26Ds. 69.0% of patients were within ± 0.25D of the target SE refraction with 100% within ± 0.5D of intended correction. Mean postoperative UDVA was 0.05 ± 0.12. All patients achieved unaided distance acuity of 20/40 or better postoperatively. Binocularly, 85.7% of patients achieved N6 or better for uncorrected intermediate visual acuity. 90.5% saw N5 or better at near without correction. No intraoperative complications were noted. 5 patients complained of moderate glare or haloes initially following the procedure.

Conclusions:

The AcrySof IQ Panoptix IOL provides comparative refractive and visual outcomes with existing trifocal models. A number of excellent IOLs now provide an extensive range of postoperative unaided vision. Surgeons should consider individual reading and working requirements when counselling patients preoperatively to optimise postoperative patient satisfaction.
