Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare cognitive functions of patents after bilateral cataract extraction with implantation of monofocal and multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs).
Setting:
Department of Public Health, Collegium Medicum, Nicolaus Copernicus University, Bydgoszcz, Poland, Oftalmika Eye Hospital, Bydgoszcz, Poland
Methods:
46 patients after bilateral cataract phacoemulsification were included to the study. In 22 of them the multifocal IOL (Restor SN6AD1, Alcon, USA) was implanted (Group 1) whereas in 24 patients the monofocal IOL (Acrysof IQ, Alcon, USA) was used (Group 2). Minimum 6 months after surgery the ophthalmological and psychological examination was performed. Except visual function measures (near and distance visual acuity, contrast sensitivity) the Trail Making Test (TMT) measuring visual attention and task switching and Stroop effect test showing interference in the reaction time were performed.
Results:
The average corrected near visual acuity (0.4 m) was 0.04 logMAR with mean correction + 0,859 D in Group 1, and 0.02 logMAR with average correction + 1,664 D in Group 2. 20 eyes from Group 1 ( 45,4 %) did not required additional near correction. The result of TMT test was 50 points (A) and 67,5 points (B) in Group 1 and 82,5 points (A) and 75,8 points (B) in Group 2. The result of Stroop effect test was 87,1 sec. and 132,7 sec. in Group 1 and 67,5 sec. and 126,5 sec. in Group 2. These differences were not statistically significant.
Conclusions:
Cognitive functions in patients after bilateral cataract extraction were similar regardless the multifocal or monofocal type of intraocular lens.
