Abstract Details
Purpose:
To analyze the influence of blurred vision, accommodation and target laser settings on eye movements during laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK).
Setting:
Prospective, randomized trial at the Department of Ophthalmology, Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany
Methods:
Eleven eyes underwent simulated LASIK treatment. Patients were instructed to fix upon the fixation light, the treatment laser was blocked, all other settings were applied according to standard LASIK treatments. To simulate blurred vision a 0 D lens received a laser treatment and was applied to the patient’s eye. To diminish accommodation a custom prepared lens was used. Eye movements were recorded under four modalities: 1) blurred lens with target laser on, 2) blurred lens with target laser turned off, 3) a +3 D lens with target laser on and 4) a +3D lens with target laser turned off.
Results:
Temporal power spectra showed a dominance of high-frequency, low-power eye movements. Shapiro-Wilk test obtained that measurement data were not normally distributed. The Friedman test detected that there was a significant difference in the F80 variable in EyeY (p = 0.039). Wilcoxon test revealed that there was a significant difference (p = 0.033) between modality 3 and 4 in this variable. Apart from this difference, none of the remaining data showed any significant difference, neither in standard deviation nor in the power spectra.
Conclusions:
Surgical circumstances such as blurred vision, accommodation and target light have only little influence on eye movements during laser in situ keratomileusis.
