Purpose:
To evaluate the long term efficacy, stability and safety of intracorneal ring segment implantation (Ferrara type) for the treatment of keratoconus.
Setting:
Central Lisbon Hospital
Methods:
Cross-sectional study involving all patients with keratoconus submitted to intracorneal ring segment implantation between 2005 and 2007 in Central Lisbon Hospital (36 eyes of 29 patients). Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), spherical equivalent (SE), corneal tomography (Pentacam Oculus, Inc., Lynnwood, WA, USA), keratoconus classification, surgical complications and side effects were evaluated. Obtained data was compared to pre-operative values.
Results:
Mean BCVA improved by 0,24 D and mean SE increased by 2,34D. Mean Kmax decreased by 4.17D and mean corneal astigmatism decreased by 3,53D. Statistical analysis showed p <0,001 for all results, compared to pre-operative values. None of the eyes was submitted to keratoplasty until the end of follow-up. Ring extrusions were observed in two eyes and were reinserted 6 months later. 13,9% of patients developed dry eye disease during the follow-up period, 19% reported halos, 16,7% photophobia and 16,7% nyctalopia. Mean follow-up time was 116,17 +/- 4,14 months.
Conclusions:
Intracorneal ring segment implantation is a safe and efficient procedure in the long term, when it comes to keratoconus treatment. Improvements in refractive parameters and corneal tomography were observed, with a low incidence of surgical complications.
