Abstract Details

Purpose:

To address new evaluation modalities for dry eye: the effect of dry eye on HOAs , and the infra red meibography tool.

Setting:

This is a match controlled clinical study that was conducted on 111 eyes divided into 2 groups ; group A :78 eyes of dry eye patients.group B:33 normal functioning tear film eyes. Study participants were recruited from ophthalmology, &rheumatology clinics Cairo university hospitals

Methods:

All study participants underwent evaluation for dry eye by break up time (BUT) , Schirmer I, and each of meibography and HOAs evaluation using the Sirius (CSO-Italy& bon optics-Germany) corneal analyzer with the Phoenix software. Meibography and HOAs evaluation were repeated in dry eye patients after artificial tears application .HOAs root mean square(RMS) value is considered at 6mm and 3mm pupillary diameters. Diagnosis of dry eye was made on basis of BUT less than 10 seconds

Results:

A significant difference is found between dry eye and control groups as regards each of total HOAs, coma aberrations, the total coma like aberrations ,Strehl ratio,& meibography parameters. While a non significant difference is found between the two groups when comparing :astigmatism, and spherical aberrations. Bivariate correlation between total HOAs and dry eye diagnostic tools(BUT, Schirmer I test,& meibography parameters)showed a significant positive linear correlation to meibography parameters, a significant negative linear correlation to each of BUT &Schirmer I test. Total HOAs RMS at 3mm=[0.215*total HOAs RMS At 6mm]-0.006.results of HOAs for the dry eye group improved after artificial tears application

Conclusions:

Dry eye increases the total HOAs specially by increasing the coma aberrations and total coma like aberrations , with no effect on each of astigmatism, spherical aberrations &spherical like aberrations , and a decrease in the Strehl ratio. Total HOAs RMS at 3mm pupillary diameter can be predicted from that at 6mm(about1/5).meibography is a good promising tool in dry eye assessment, although it is operator dependent. Proper dry eye disease evaluation couldn't be achieved by a single test,a combination of many tools is recommended
