Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the repeatability and between-observer reproducibility of very high-frequency (VHF) digital ultrasound for corneal thickness, epithelial thickness, sulcus diameter, and lens equatorial diameter.

Setting:

London Vision Clinic, London, UK

Methods:

Five consecutive measurements were obtained for 10 eyes of 10 pre-operative patients using the Insight 100 VHF digital ultrasound scanner by 2 operators. The central value was recorded for corneal and epithelial thickness as obtained by an automatic interface detection algorithm. The sulcus diameter and lens equatorial diameter were measured from the B-scan image using the caliper tool within the software. Repeatability and between-observer reproducibility analysis was performed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The standard deviation, coefficient of repeatability (COR, 2.77xSD) and coefficient of variation (COV, SD/mean) were calculated for each measured parameter.

Results:

For central corneal thickness, the repeatability was 2.35 μm (COR 6.50 μm, COV 0.41%) and between-observer reproducibility was 1.66 μm (COR 4.60 μm, COV 0.29%). For central epithelial thickness, the repeatability was 0.72 μm (COR 2.01 μm, COV 1.32%) and between-observer reproducibility was 0.19 μm (COR 0.54 μm, COV 0.35%). For sulcus diameter, the repeatability was 0.12 mm (COR 0.34 μm, COV 1.13%) and between-observer reproducibility was 0.019 mm (COR 0.052 μm, COV 0.17%). For lens equatorial diameter, the repeatability was 0.13 mm (COR 0.36 μm, COV 1.30%) and between-observer reproducibility was 0.024 mm (COR 0.065 μm, COV 0.24%).

Conclusions:

Measurement of corneal thickness, epithelial thickness, sulcus diameter, and lens equatorial diameter showed high repeatability and between-observer reproducibility for the Insight 100 VHF digital ultrasound scanner.
