Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare 6-month uncorrected and target-corrected outcomes of patients monocularly implanted with a small aperture (IC-8) intraocular lens (IOL) in the non-dominant eye and an aspheric monofocal IOL in the dominant eye.
Setting:
Eleven patients presenting for cataract surgery, were implanted with a single-piece hydrophobic acrylic IC-8 IOL (AcuFocus), consisting of a centrally opaque annular mask measuring 3.23mm diameter with a 1.36mm central aperture in the non-dominant eye, and an aspheric PCB00 monofocal IOL (Abbott) in the fellow eye.
Methods:
IC-8 eyes were targeted for -0.75 D post-op refraction and monofocal eyes were targeted for plano. Uncorrected (U) and target-corrected (TC) distance (D), intermediate (I) and near (N) visual acuities (VA), and mean refractive spherical equivalent (MRSE) were evaluated at 6 months post-implantation. TCVA corrects the refraction in the IC-8 eye to -0.75 D and the monofocal eye to plano. Mean acuity is reported in logMAR and snellen equivalent.
Results:
Mean uncorrected MRSE was +0.10 D +/- 0.68 in the IC-8 eye and +0.60 D +/- 0.71 in the monofocal eye. Target-corrected MRSE was -0.75 D in the IC-8 eye and plano in the monofocal eye. The mean binocular UDVA, UIVA and UNVA following monocular IC-8 implantation was 0.01 +/- 0.10 (6/6), 0.12 +/- 0.20 (6/7.5) and 0.28 +/- 0.17 (6/12) respectively and improved with target-correction to -0.09 +/- 0.11 (6/4.8), 0.05 +/- 0.13 (6/6) and 0.16 +/- 0.14 (6/9) for TCDVA, TCIVA and TCNVA respectively.
Conclusions:
Both uncorrected and target-corrected visual acuities show patients achieve good for near, intermediate and distance vision performance despite the differences in refractive error. With a target correction of -0.75D in the IC-8 eye, near and intermediate visual acuities improve while excellent distance visual acuity is maintained.
