Abstract Details
Purpose:
There is scarcity of data about blindness and visual impairment related to glaucoma in Egypt. This study aims to evaluate socio-demographic factors responsible for vision impairment and blindness among glaucoma patients.
Setting:
Beni Suef University Hospital and Fayoum Uniuversity Hospital
Methods:
This was an observational cross-sectional study. Socio-demographic data and information about glaucoma were obtained through face-to-face semi-structured questionnaires.
Results:
A total of 300 patients were interviewed. 32.7% were males and 67.3% were females with ages ranging from 24 to 88 years. Our study has shown that 29.3% were blind while 66.0% were visually impaired due to glaucoma. Many factors including age, education, occupation, hypertension, cataract, and onset of glaucoma significantly influenced visual outcome among glaucoma patients. Out of study participants, 63.0% paid for treatment of glaucoma.
Conclusions:
Blindness and visual impairment is common sequences among glaucoma patients. Many factors have a significant impact on development of sight-threatening complications among glaucoma patients.
