Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate visual impairment in patients over 80 years, with and without cataract, using a brief questionnaire designed to measure visual impairment in daily activities depending on visual function in elderly population (ADVF).
Setting:
Ophthalmology and Geriatric Departments. Hospital Central de Cruz Roja. Madrid. Spain
Methods:
48 patients were recruited from a single centre, after informed consent. Patients were interviewed using the ADVF questionnaire and an ophthalmologic examination was carried out in all participants. Main outcomes: Best corrected visual acuity in the both eyes, scores of the ADVF, correlation of ADVF with visual acuity, ocular comorbidities.
Results:
48 patients (33 women/15 men) with mean age of 88 years were included. 26 had cataract and 22 were pseudophakic. The ADVF test mean score was of 83,9 + 2,59.Mean visual acuity among patients with cataract (0,45) or without cataract (0,46) was similar. Main ocular comorbidities found were macular degeneration (27%), glaucoma (14,5%) amblyopia (14,5%) retina pathology (10%) diabetic retinopathy (8%) and corneal pathology(4%).No correlation was found between visual acuity and ADVF.
Conclusions:
The main cause of visual impairment among patients over 80 years are ocular comorbidities and not cataract. Scores of ADVF showed no visual impairment in 86% of the patients, though the main visual acuity was of 0,4.Daily activities depending on visual function were performed with difficulty only in the group of patients having best corrected visual acuity under 0,3.
