Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the patient-reported outcome as defined by Catquest-9SF in patients receiving bilaterally two kinds of IOL, either two mono-focal IOLs or two trifocal IOLs.
Setting:
Baviera Clinic, Valencia, Spain.
Methods:
Bilateral cataract extractions were performed as phaco procedures and the patients received either two mono-focal or two trifocal IOLs. A Spanish version of Catquest-9SF was validated through Rasch analysis. The patients completed the Spanish Catquest-9SF before and three months after surgery. The outcome was studied through three response variables using the Rasch person score. The first response variable measures the change in patient-reported visual function after surgery. The second response variable measures the postoperative level of visual function achieved by the surgery. The third response variable is a global question measuring the general satisfaction with visual function after surgery.
Results:
The Spanish version of Catquest-9SF showed excellent psychometric properties in the Rasch analysis. The mean age of the patients was 60.8 ±9.9 years and 63.1% were females. Seventy-eight patients had a mono-focal IOL and 162 patients had a trifocal IOL implanted in both eyes. For all three response variables the trifocal group had a significantly better outcome than the mono-focal group. There was a difference in mean age between the IOL groups. In a subset of patients (47 of each IOL) matched on exactly the same age the significant difference remained to the benefit of trifocal IOLs.
Conclusions:
A translated version of the Catquest-9SF into Spanish showed excellent psychometric properties by Rasch analysis. Patients achieving a trifocal IOL had significantly better patient-reported outcome compared with patients achieving a monofocal IOL. This means that our study shows less patient-reported activity limitations in daily life after a trifocal IOL implantation compared with a monofocal IOL implantation. Other dimensions of quality of life like ocular symptoms or convenience have not been tested.
