Abstract Details
Purpose:
To report the outcomes after the femtoseconed laser assisted implantation of Keraring 320º intrastromal corneal ring for the treatment of keratoconus.
Setting:
Alpha vision center, Zagazig, Egypt
Methods:
This study included 14 eyes of 11 patients (mean age, 24 ± 3.4 years) with keratoconus who underwent ICR implantation (Keraring 320°) using femtoseoned laser (Visumax, ZEISS, Germany) The main outcomes measures included: Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), manifest refraction and keratometry readings. The mean postoperative follow-up was 12 months.
Results:
At the 12th month follow-up visit, there was a statistically significant reduction in the mean spherical equivalent refractive error (-1.35 ± 1.87 D postoperative versus -5.46± 2.55 D preoperative, p=0.001).The mean UDVA 0.1 ± 0.05 preoperatively to 0.3± 0.1 postoperatively (p=0.001), while mean CDVA improved from 0.3 ± 0.15 to 0.6± 0.15, p=0.001). The mean sphere and cylinder of manifest refraction decreased significantly by 3.75 and 3.25 diopter (D) respectively (p< 0.001).Additionally, the mean K reading decreased by 5.11 D (from 49.74 D to 44.63 D, p=0.001). The majority of patients were satisfied with Keraring 320º implant. No intraoperative and postoperative complications were demonstrated in this series of patients.
Conclusions:
The outcomes of this study show that the ICRS (KeraRing 320º) implantation using femtoseconed laser provides an effective method for managing keratoconus.
