Purpose:

To compare the actual amount of benefit of WIOL-CF polyfocal bioanalogic lens implantation on reading functions relatively to impaired distance vision in patients with maculopathy

Setting:

Retrospective analysis of nonrandomized single case series, each patient operated by single surgeon (author) at Očné oddelenie, Fakultná nemocnica s poliklinikou Žilina, Slovakia

Methods:

15 healthy cataract surgery patients (30 eyes) and 10 patients with cataract and mild maculopathy (20 eyes) were assigned to have bilateral implantation of WIOL-CF polyfocal bioanalogic lens (MEDICEM Technology s.r.o., Czech Republic) in the capsular bag. The main study outcomes were assessed at 6 month follow-up visit and included uncorrected distance, intermediate (70cm) and near (40cm) visual acuity. To assess the amount of surgery benefit on reading functions relatively to postoperative distance vision, we compared the inclination of linear regression curves from the data of both groups

Results:

The difference between maculopathy and healthy group was statistically significant for UCDVA (p=0,02) and UCIVA (p=0,002), but was not significant for UCNVA (p=0,47). Thus, the benefit of surgery regarding UCNVA relatively to distance VA for maculopathy patients is not worse or comparable to healthy patients.

Conclusions:

Cataract extraction with binocular WIOL-CF polyfocal bioanalogic lens implantation in patients with maculopathy provides spectacle free vision at all distances and an extra benefit on close distance relatively to impaired distance visual acuity.
