Purpose:
To investigate feasibility of retinal surgical procedures with a small-aperture intraocular lens (IOL).
Setting:
University Eye Hospital Bochum
Methods:
A case series of pseudophakic patients with small-aperture IOL (IC-8, AcuFocus), who underwent retinal surgical procedures. All procedures were performed by the same surgeon with the Lumera microscope (Zeiss). Central, mid-peripheral and peripheral retina treatments were investigated in terms of feasibility, shading and stereoacuity.
Results:
A 23-gauge pars plana vitrectomy was successfully performed in four patients after IC-8 implantation. The treated diseases were diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment and epiretinal membrane peeling. During the treatment the mask in the IOL did not affect the surgeon’s stereoacuity in epiretinal membrane peeling. Furthermore, central and peripheral retina treatment with high and low power lenses was possible. Also, the use of a direct contact lens (Kilp lens, Bausch & Lomb) did not affect the feasibilty of the treatment.
Conclusions:
Visualization of the posterior fundus and performing retinal surgical procedures are feasible in IC-8 small-aperture IOL eyes with minor modifications to the technique, as needed.
