Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the defocus curve profile of an aspheric, hydrophobic acrylic extended depth of focus intraocular lens (EDoF-IOL) with a monofocal intraocular lens (IOL)

Setting:

BMI Southend Private Hospital, Westcliff on sea, Essex

Methods:

Two groups of subjects were recruited for the study. The first group was bilaterally implanted with an EDoF-IOL and the second was bilaterally implanted with an acrylic monofocal IOL. At 3-6 months; uncorrected distance (UCDVA) and near (UCNVA) visual acuity; best distance corrected distance (BCDVA), intermediate (BCIVA) and near (BCNVA) visual acuity and Defocus curves were assessed.

Results:

Fifteen subjects were implanted with the EDoF-IOL and fifteen with the monofocal IOL. The UCDVA (p=0.612), BCDVA (p=0.312) and BCNVA (p=0.086) were similar between groups however the BCIVA (p=0.036) was better in the EDoF-IOL group. Defocus curve assessment revealed a greater depth of focus for the EDoF-IOL group using a 0.3LogMAR acuity threshold (p=0.042).

Conclusions:

The EDoF-IOL provides a greater depth of focus in comparison with a conventional monofocal IOL and intermediate visual acuity is better with the EDoF-IOL lens design.
